The Breast Health Center
Every two minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 40,000 women died from the disease in the last year alone.
Catawba Valley Medical Center knows that early detection is critical in improving breast cancer survival rates. Our hospital emphasizes breast health through educational classes, health fairs and other awareness events. We work closely with the Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition, the NC
Foothills Komen Affliliate and the
American Cancer Society to promote early detection in our community.
Our Center offers state-of-the-art detection and diagnosis, such as Breast Ultrasound and Breast Biopsy procedures. Our innovative screening and treatment options include:
- Digital Mammography-This new technology, particularly effective in younger women or those with dense breast tissue, can detect micro-calcifications as small as a single grain of salt.
- Stereotactic Needle Biopsy-Leading-edge equipment allows the surgeon or radiologist to precisely target extremely small masses or calcifications just millimeters in size. The compute calculates the depth to the middle of the lesion, allowing the physician to effectively and quickly take samples for pathological examination.
- MammoSite Treatment-Delivers targeted radiation therapy to surrounding tissue after a lumpectomy to jump-start further treatments, such as chemotherapy.
- PET/CT Center -Utilizes the most advanced combined capability scanner to stage and re-stage breast cancer.
We work in tandem with our Comprehensive Cancer Center to provide care for breast cancer patients through each of their diagnostic and treatment phases. Reach to Recovery, breast cancer support group, and Cancer Resource Nurses all exist to support women with the physical and psychosocial changes after breast cancer.
