According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, early diagnosis of a disease significantly improves its chances of being cured or successfully managed.
Catawba Valley Medical Center understands the importance of including prevention in primary health care. Of all its outreach programs, the Health First Center at Valley Hills Mall has been most effective at spreading this message within the community.
The Health First Center is a multi-dimensional, easily accessible resource for people coping with everyday health concerns. It offers comprehensive educational programs and screenings that heighten awareness of disease risk factors, provide important early detection services, and teach skills to help prevent and/or cope with illness and its effects on individuals and their loved ones. Dozens of monthly programs are targeted toward specific health concerns and lifestyle choices, including heart disease, cancer, nutrition, fitness, diabetes, and smoking cessation.
Most programs are free and open to the public, and many are specifically designed for the unique needs of men, women, children, or seniors. Classes are taught by registered nurses, medical staff members, and other certified allied professionals.
The Center’s outreach programs recently expanded to include the Rehobeth United Methodist Church community wellness program in Terrell, located in southeast Catawba County. Once a month, a Health First Center representative visits the church and provides information about a specific health issue as requested by program participants. The Health First Center also provides a monthly health article for the church’s newsletter. This type of expansion reflects the medical center’s efforts to provide access to Health First Center services throughout the community.
Perhaps most importantly, the Health First Center provides free or low-cost health screenings to help identify health problems at their earliest stages. Regular screenings include prostate, cholesterol, blood sugar, and bone density. Blood pressure checks are available anytime the center is open. While most screenings can be handled in a physician’s office, the Center has proven to be an efficient option for many in the community.
“The Health First Center’s involvement in our wellness program is a wonderful service to this community. After participating in our third annual Election Day Health Fair, which was conducted by Catawba Valley Medical Center, several of our clients have shown a renewed interest in taking care of their health.” ~ Jane Sowder, RN, Rehobeth United Methodist Church Parish Nurse
