Solutions for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome According to the National Institutes of Health, carpal tunnel syndrome is caused when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, is pressed or squeezed at the wrist. Symptoms include pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist that radiates up the arm. According to Dr. Donald Campbell of Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists, non-surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome may involve the following: “If surgery is required, the standard procedure is relatively simple,” says Dr. Campbell. “It involves a one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half inch incision in the palm of the hand and can usually be done under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Afterwards, the wrist is splinted for three weeks and post-operative rehabilitation is recommended. Most patients can resume regular activity after four weeks.” For more information about treating carpal tunnel syndrome, please call Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists at 828/324-2800.
