CVMC’s Center for Sleep Disorders Announces Three Physicians Board Certified in Sleep Medicine | Print |

Three physicians practicing in The Center for Sleep Disorders at Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) recently received Board Certification in Sleep Medicine, according to Scott Gibson, director of The Center for Sleep Disorders.

Kathy Wilson, MD and CVMC hospitalist, serves as the Medical Director for The Center for Sleep Disorders. Dr. Wilson earned her Board certification in Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. 

McKendree McNabb, MD, is a private practice pulmonologist with an office in downtown Hickory. Dr. McNabb also earned his Board certification in Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Robert Yapundich, MD, is a neurologist with Neurology Associates. Dr. Yapundich earned his Board certification in Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. 

“It’s a unique attribute for one facility in our area to have three physicians board certified in Sleep Medicine,” said Gibson. “We are pleased to have Drs. Wilson, McNabb and Yapundich providing area residents with quality care in accessing and treating sleep health issues.”

The CVMC Center for Sleep Disorders is a six-bed facility and the first in the area to receive national accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). 

Hours for the Center for Sleep Disorders are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide initial consultations, Multiple Sleep Latency Testing, Multiple Wake Testing and follow-up visits with physicians and community education. HICKORY--Catawba Valley Medical Center recently announced its 2010 Medical Staff Officers and Department Chiefs, according to J. Anthony Rose, president and CEO. “Catawba Valley Medical Center is very fortunate that these physicians will be providing leadership for the hospital’s medical staff of more than 350 physicians,” Mr. Rose stated. Charles Scheil, MD, will serve as the 2010 Chief of Staff with James Harris, Jr., MD, as Vice Chief of Staff and Steven Williamson, MD, as Secretary.

 The following physicians are serving this year as Department Chiefs: Lawson Huggins, MD, Emergency Medicine; Alan Story, MD, Family Practice; Ismo Kaariainen, MD, Medicine; Harold Dufour, Jr., MD, Ob-Gyn; Mark Atkins, MD, Pathology; David Berry, MD, Pediatrics; W. Grant Harbison, MD, Psychiatry; Knox Tate, MD, Radiology, and Kenneth Parish, MD, Surgery.

Catawba Valley Medical Center Names Elliot Boston as 2009 CARE Employee of the Year | Print |

Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) recognizes each month a single employee who epitomizes CARE—one who embodies Courtesy, Attitude, Respect and Enthusiasm for commitment to maintaining a positive guest relations atmosphere and to demonstrating a sincere compassion and concern for patients and fellow staff members. At the end of the calendar year, one employee is chosen from the twelve recognized throughout the year and is named “CARE Employee of the Year.” CVMC recently announced Elliot Boston received this high honor for 2009, according to J. Anthony Rose, president and CEO of the facility. 

An Executive Chef in Nutrition Care, Boston has been employed by CVMC since 2004. “I am so honored to be named CARE employee of the year because there were so many other employees deserving of the recognition. I feel very blessed,” said Boston. 

Married and the father of two, Boston is a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Taylorsville where he enjoys teaching children’s Sunday School.

Catawba Valley Medical Group (CVMG), a service of Catawba Valley Medical Center, announces the addition of Aimee Cavendish, MD.

Dr. Cavendish received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC. An alumnus of Alpha Phi Omega, Dr. Cavendish is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, North Carolina Medical Association and Catawba County Medical Society. In addition, she has given of her time to the International Medical Mission Work in Honduras.

Catawba Valley Imaging Center Receives American College of Radiology Accreditation | Print |

Catawba Valley Imaging Center, a service of Catawba Valley Medical Center, has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). 

Located at 1501 Tate Boulevard, Catawba Valley Imaging Center (CVIC) provides diagnostic x-rays, CT scans, ultrasound imaging, bone density scans, mammography, MRI and nuclear medicine for those who can receive their tests as outpatients. Equipped with totally digitalized technology, CVIC is dedicated to patient comfort and easy access to services. The office can be reached by phone at 828-485-2766; the office hours are from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
 
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
 
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
