At Catawba Valley Medical Center, we know that early detection of cancer can lead to better outcomes.  Because of this, we partner with other agencies to promote cancer awareness and early detection within our community.  These initiatives include the following:

Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition
An initiative involving the medical center and several local agencies offering free breast health education programs to women and teens in the community.  Additional outreach takes place at the Health First Center, where women can learn proper techniques for breast self-exams or join local support groups affiliated with the American Cancer Society (ACS).  Through a leadership role with the Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition and partnerships with the American Cancer Society and the NC Foothills affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Catawba Valley Medical Center plays a vital part in promoting breast health and early detection within the community.

Catawba County Wig Bank
The Catawba County Wig Bank provides new and gently used wigs, breast prostheses and mastectomy bras for cancer survivors and patients who cannot purchase these items themselves. Head coverings are also available. All items are donated by the community and the American Cancer Society. Community volunteers make the turbans and other head coverings.

Other than the American Cancer Society, the wig bank is sponsored by NC Foothills Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Catawba Medical Foundation’s Women in Philanthropy and Through Healing Eyes, Inc.. The wig bank is staff by volunteers. Appointments are required. Call Brenda Putnam at 828-326-2176 for an appointment. The wig bank is managed by the Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition.

Cancer Task Force
Catawba Valley Medical Center has joined forces with Catawba County Health Partners to form the Cancer Task Force, a new initiative aiming to reduce prostate cancer among minority men and all colorectal cancer death rates among all populations in Catawba County by ten percent by the year 2012.  The Task Force is undertaking an awareness campaign and conducting free semi-annual screenings.
