2010 EBP Week a Success.  The Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council is pleased to report a strong response to its annual EBP emphasis week, April 18th to23rd.  Beginning on Sunday and continuing through Friday, Council members conducted floor rounds with the "Who's First"game for both day and night shifts.  "Who's First," like College Bowl, is a first on the buzzer game, and prizes were 'earned' by correctly answering evidence-based practice questions.  Over the course of the week, 182 nurses, 29 NA/Techs14 MD/NP/CNM and 19 staff members in the RT/RPh/SW/Student category particpated.

This year's Poster Session was open from 4:00 PM on the 20th through midnight of the 2st.  Lenoir-Rhyne University Senior Nursing Students (11) presented posters of their Quality Improvement Practicum Projects, and 4 CVMC nurses presented EBP Initiative Posters.  Over 125 persons viewed the poster presentations!  Apple Crisp samplers were served to those attending from 1100-1300 on Wednesday when the students and nurses were present to discuss their work.  These staff also received EBP Survival Kits.  CVMC nursing administrators served as poster judges, and awards were presented to the student projects earning highest scores.

Dara Curtis, MSN, RN, CPN, CNM, Pediatrics

Dara earned her BSN at Lenoir-Rhyne University in 1999 and joined CVMC’s nursing staff thereafter.  She first worked on the Surgical Unit, and then after two years moved to Pediatrics. Thanks to an initiative to increase certified pediatric nurses, Dara earned her CPN in 2005.  She also completed her MSN in Nurse Midwifery that same year.  Currently, Dara is participating in the Future Nurse Leader Test Drive program.  Her future goal is to pursue a position in nursing leadership.   She also serves as a STAR Preceptor for Pediatrics.

When asked what EBP means to her, Dara’s response was, “EBP is a vital part of any area of nursing to ensure that every effort is made to provide an optimal level of care and expedite the recovery process.  Literature searches are imperative to maintain competency on certain topics and acquire new information based on what others have found.  I strive to incorporate best evidence into my everyday practice by staying up to date on the latest research and utilizing that knowledge.“

Dara and her husband, Allen, have two children, Anna and Alyson.  She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and being involved in her church, Catawba Valley Baptist, Morganton. §
