In a collaborative effort, Catawba Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center will present the program, "I Can Cope," a series of four educational classes for those with cancer, their families and friends beginning Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Jade Room on the service floor of CVMC.
"Experience has shown that people who know more about the disease with which they are afflicted make informed decisions with their doctors and become partners in the treatment process," said Peggy Messick, RN, Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN), Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) and Cancer Screening Coordinator for Catawba Valley Medical Center. "Facing cancer can be one of the most significant challenges anyone can face. 'I Can Cope' helps people meet this challenge by clarifying facts and myths."
The classes will provide factual, straightforward cancer information and answers about the development of cancer, its diagnosis and treatment, side effects of treatment, communication skills, emotions, and community resources.
Although there is no charge for the program, registration is required before Aug. 6; enrollment is limited. Classes will be Tuesdays, Aug. 10, Aug. 17, Aug. 24 and Aug. 31. Light refreshment is included with each class meeting. Contact Ms. Messick at 828-485-2300 to register.
