HealthFirst Center - October 2004 Program Calendar

To register for these events, receive general health care information, or obtain more information about Catawba Valley Medical Center's HealthFirst Center call 828-485-2300 or visit us online at www.catawbavalleymc.org. Programs and screenings are held at the HealthFirst Center at Valley Hills Mall unless otherwise noted. Please call 828/485-2300 to register. Times indicated are start times. Please cancel registrations if your plans change. Individual consultation/referrals, free blood pressure screenings and the health library are always available during center hours: Monday - Saturday, 10am to 9pm; Sunday 1 to 5pm. For information or to register, call the listed number.

The HealthFirst Center at Valley Hills Mall is a service of Catawba Valley Medical Center, a not-for-profit healthcare system providing and promoting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of the public. The Center serves as a convenient location for health education and wellness services. CVMC was designated in 2001 as the thirty-second Magnet facility in the nation and the second in the Carolinas.

1/Fri - HEART TO HEART TALK
12noon Join Pat Benfield, Coordinator of CVMC's Cardiac Rehab, as he shares the latest information on maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle. Pre-registration required.

1/Fri - ALZHEIMER'S SERIES
6:30pm Join Michelle Rossback, Foothills Area Manager of the Alzheimer's Association, as she presents a program on 'Enhancing Communication: Skills for Working with Persons with Dementia.' Pre-registration required.

2/Sat - LADIES' MORNING OUT
11am Join Glennie Daniels from the NC Cooperative Extension as she demonstrates how to make a family cookbook. This project makes an ideal Christmas present for that family member or friend who has everything. Also included in this program are breast health information, refreshments, and door prizes.

3, 17, 24/Sun - LAMAZE
3:30pm Offered as a seven-week series, this program, certified through Lamaze International, is designed to assist expectant parents through the delivery process. Pre-registration required.

4, 11, 18, 25/Mon - HARMONY YOGA
10am Offered each Monday morning to promote relaxation while strengthening the mind and body. Participants in this class need to be 16 years of age and older.

4/Mon - HEALING TOUCH
12noon Join Cindy Jordan, Catawba Valley Medical Center Chaplain, and Patty Tucker, CVMC Parish Nurse Coordinator, as they demonstrate the power of healing touch and share how this process can aid those dealing will illnesses. Pre-registration required.

4/Mon - FREE BONE DENSITY SCREENINGS
4pm-6pm No appointment is necessary. Offered to men and women age 35 and older. It should be at least one year since your last bone density screening, and expectant moms will need to decline. This screening offers a baseline risk factor and is not intended for diagnosis purposes.

4/Mon - MOM AND ME TEEN TALK
7pm Offered to moms and their daughters ages 10 to 15 years. Join Julie Sandine, LCSW, and Candice Justice, Health Educator with Catawba County Health Department, as they present "A Survival Guide to Adolescent Emotions." Space is limited to the first 20 moms and daughters who pre-register.

5, 12, 19, 26/Tues & 7, 14, 21, 28/Thurs - AEROBICS
9am Offered each Tuesday and Thursday morning, this low impact class will assist you in maintaining cardiovascular health. Participants in this class need to be 16 years of age and older.

6, 13, 20, 27/Wed - HARMONY YOGA
9am Offered each Wednesday morning to promote relaxation while strengthening the mind and body. Participants in this class need to be 16 years of age and older.

6/Wed - SUCCESSFUL FAMILY CAREGIVING: ADVANCED DIRECTIVES
10am Some of the most important issues faced by family caregivers are Living Wills and Health Care Power of Attorney. Join Glennie Daniels of the NC Cooperative Extension as she shares information that can help you through this difficult decision. Pre-registration required.

6/Wed - ANGER MANAGEMENT: CONFLICT CAN EAT AT YOUR BODY
6pm Join Tammy Wilcox, Director of the Conflict Resolution Center, as she presents information on managing anger. Pre-registration required.

7, 14/Thurs - REFRESHER LAMAZE
6pm Certified through Lamaze International, this class offers review of relaxation, breathing techniques, and the birthing process. Pre-registration required.

8/Fri - HIV TESTING
11:30am-3:30pm AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance (ALFA) will be administering a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL HIV test called OraQuick. With a prick of the finger, results are received in just 20 minutes. This test is quick, easy, and 99.97% accurate. This screening is by appointment only.

10/Fri - MOM TO MOM
1pm A new support group for moms and families struggling with issues during and after pregnancy. Pre-registration required.

11/Mon - MEDICAL EXPLORER SCOUTS
7pm Open to all teenagers interested in pursuing a career in the health education or medical fields. Meet Gary Smith, R.Ph., as he shares information about Pharmacy job opportunities. Pre-registration required.

12/Tues - "WEEKEND WARRIOR INJURIES"
7pm-8pm Join Dr. Robert Liljeberg from Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists and learn about the common weekend injury to the common athlete. Pre-registration required.

13, 27/Wed - INFANT MASSAGE
10am Join CVMC's Certified Instructors as they guide you through this drop-in class. Massage strengthens baby's circulatory, respiratory and gastrointestinal functions. This class also promotes positive bonding and helps establish a loving communication between parent and baby.

13/Wed - CAR SEAT INSPECTION
11:30am Sponsored by the SAFE KIDS Coalition, have your infant or child restraint inspected by nationally certified technicians. The inspection station will be located at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Conover.

13, 20, 27/Wed - LAMAZE
7pm Certified through Lamaze International, this seven-week series is designed to assist expectant parents through the delivery process. Pre-registration required.

15/Fri - COOKING DEMO: FALL HARVEST
12noon Join us to celebrate the fall harvest as CVMC's Executive Chef Thua and Lynn Geissele, Registered Dietitian, present recipes featuring squash and pumpkin. Pre-registration required.

Oct. 15, 22/Fri & Nov. 5, 12/Fri - LAMAZE MINI SERIES
6pm Certified through Lamaze International, this 4 week mini series is designed to assist expectant parents through the delivery process. Pre-registration required.

16/Sat - RACE FOR A CURE
7am Located at Lenoir-Rhyne College, registration begins at 7am. Fun Walk begins at 8:30am, 5K race is at 9am. Registration is $17; after Oct. 1, $25. Proceeds go to the national and local chapters of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. For more information call (828) 781-CURE, or register online at www.komenncfoothills.org. 16/Sat - BABYSITTER'S CLINIC
10am-3pm Offered to kids aged 12 and older, this class will focus on babysitting safety, including fire safety, basic first aid, emergencies, and the basics of child care. The cost is $10 to cover lunch and materials for class. Parents must pick their child up at the Center after class. Pre-registration required.

17/Sun - "PINK TEA" SEVENTH ANNUAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CELEBRATION
3pm Located at the First United Methodist Church in Conover, this celebration is for all women and will include entertainment, refreshments, door prizes, early detection information, and a mini "pink ribbon" bazaar. Please call ahead to register. Pre-registration required.

18/Mon - CANSURMOUNT SUPPORT GROUP
7pm Dr. Terry Sarantou from Hickory Surgical Clinic will speak on breast cancer. Dr. Sarantou is a Surgical Oncologist and specializes in the surgical treatment of breast cancer. Pre-registration required.

21/Thurs - ENCOURAGING WEIGH
6pm Join CVMC's Dr. Vondell Clark of the Weight Management Center and Debra Engleman, Social Worker, as they discuss the emotional effects of weight loss and life style changes. Pre-registration required.

22/Fri - SENIORITY BINGO
10am Catawba Seniority members are invited to join CVMC's Auxiliary in one of our favorite games, while keeping our minds sharp at the same time. Please call to register as space is limited.

23/Sat - INFANT CPR
10am Offered to our Lamaze parents and grandparents, learn cardiovascular resuscitation for infants. This class is offered by CVMC Certified Instructors and is not intended for professional certification. Pre-registration required.

26/Tues - POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVING
10am Taking Care of You…Powerful Tools for Caregiving is an educational program for family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, stroke, and other chronic conditions. The tools discussed in this six-session series will enable caregivers to increase self-care, and give them confidence in handling difficult situations, emotions, and decisions. The cost is $12 to cover lunch and program materials for all six sessions. Pre-registration required.

27/Wed - WORKABLE WELLNESS: WHEN YOU ARE THE HELP
12noon Join Glennie Daniels of the NC Cooperative Extension as she provides new ways to keep the house clean even during those busy times of the year. Pre-registration required.

28/Thurs - SENIORS' HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION PROGRAM (SHIIP)
11am-1pm Visit with a SHIIP Counselor for free, objective information on Medicare eligibility, enrollment, coverage and the new medicare prescription discount card. No appointment is necessary.

28/Thurs - GREAT START BREASTFEEDING CLASS
6:30pm Offered by CVMC's Certified Lactation Consultants, this class offers breastfeeding instruction to new moms of newborn babies through first year of life. Pre-registration required.

29/Fri - HEALING TOUCH
