Catawba Valley Medical Center recently added two case managers to its staff, according to Mary McDaniels, Administrator of Clinical Resource Management. Case management is a shared process that assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the services needed to meet the health and human service needs of an individual or group of patients. Case managers advocate and promote quality and cost-effective patient care.

Ann Brooks has been a registered nurse for 26 years, working the past 21 years as an emergency nurse as a staff nurse, educator, preceptor and manager. In her new position as CVMC's Cardiovascular Case Manager, Ms. Brooks will work to enhance patient care for those experiencing heart failure and acute myocardial infarction using established criteria. One of her responsibilities will be to educate clinical staff members in all areas of the medical center on how to use these guidelines to improve patient care. Before taking this new position, Ms. Brooks served as Patient Care Coordinator in CVMC's Emergency Department. Prior to moving to Hickory three years ago, Ms. Brooks was a Clinical Coordinator in a chest pain emergency room in a large hospital in Florida.
Joanne Gonwa, CVMC's Complex Medical Case Manager, works collaboratively with the clinical staff in the Emergency Room, medical and critical care areas, and the rehabilitation unit to ensure that patients diagnosed with pneumonia and stroke/transient ischemic attack receive care in accordance with evidence-based practice. Increasing staff awareness and patient education are her major responsibilities in enhancing patient care in her specific areas. Ms. Gonwa brings with her more than a decade of experience in case management. A former president of the original Greensboro (NC) chapter of the Case Management Society of America, she is also a founding member of our state's first chapter. Ms. Gonwa received certification in Case Management in 1995 and maintained that credential through 2005. Her clinical background includes pediatric intensive care, operating room nursing and home health care.
