Center for Sleep Disorders

CVMC's Center for Sleep Disorders recently received national accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for its, according to Scott Gibson, director of the Center and Neurodiagnostic Services.

"Sleep medicine is a recognized medical subspecialty," said Gibson. "Our goal at the Center for Sleep Disorders is to make sure that area residents with sleep problems get high quality medical care. Among the sleep disorders we will diagnose and treat include insomnia, Restless Leg Syndrome, sleepwalking, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea among others."

The CVMC Center for Sleep Disorders is a six-bed facility and the first accredited center in the area. Nancy D. Morewitz, MD, is the medical director of the Center for Sleep Disorders and a diplomate of AASM. The Center for Sleep Disorders is located beside the medical facility's Catawba Valley Imaging Center on Tate Boulevard, Hickory. Center hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Multiple Sleep Latency Testing, follow-up visits with physicians and community education. Night sleep studies begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 7 a.m. To reach the Center for Sleep Disorders by phone, call 828-485-2814.

The AASM accredits centers and labs that treat people who have sleep problems. AASM accreditation is the "gold standard" for the field. It shows that a sleep center or lab maintains the highest standards in all it does.

Established in 1975 as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine is the only professional society that is dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine. As the leading voice in the field of sleep medicine, the AASM sets standards and promotes excellence in health care, education and research.
