Spiritual Care

Spiritual Care
Catawba Valley Medical Center recognizes that the spiritual care of patients affect their healing process. In order to address spiritual needs, the Spiritual Care department offers the following services:

  • Any patient may ask that his/her pastor, priest, rabbi, shaman, religious leader or organization be notified. In order to protect privacy, such a call is only placed at the patient's request.
  • Patients, family members and/or staff may request a visit from one of the medical center chaplains. Pastoral support includes services such as listening to concerns, questions, joys and sorrows; offering or sharing in a time of prayer; supporting patient and family during difficult decisions; providing supportive literature as well as spiritual and pastoral presence, and assisting in coordination of rituals upon request.
  • Chapel available on the first floor of CVMC beside the gift shop
  • Music Therapy
  • Meditation Line: 326-3683

Parish Nursing & Faith Community Wellness Programs
Community Parish Nurses receive support from our CVMC Parish Nurse Coordinator. This coordinator assists faith communities in assessing their particular areas of needs and interests. The church or faith community is given information and options as well as support in the development of a program. This may include the development of a Wellness Committee. The establishment of a Parish Nurse Ministry can be a paid or non-paid position. The Parish Nurse Coordinator also shares information on services available in our community.

Community Programs
CVMC's Spiritual Care department offers several programs to the community including:

Conversation in Ethics--Healthcare professionals and the community are invited to attend monthly sessions of 'Conversations in Ethics.' This monthly, no-charge meeting provides an opportunity for discussion of some of the most important issues facing the healthcare profession today. Sessions are generally held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday each month in the Northwest AHEC Lecture Hall, Room 112. Completion of this activity provides 1.2 contact hours of continuing nursing education via CVMC, Department of Organizational Learning, an approved provider of continuing education by the NCNA, an accredited approver by the ANCC-COA. For more information or to reserve the no-charge lunch that is included in the event, please call 828-326-3365.

Labyrinth-In 2002, the Catawba Medical Foundation funded the purchase of a 36-foot portable canvas labyrinth. Often a tool for prayer or meditation, walking a labyrinth invites the participant to explore the mind. It can be an invitation for Divine Wisdom to guide or to comfort. Or it can simply be a way to let go of stress, worries or concerns and find some peace and perhaps some direction. Labyrinths are found in churches, at hospitals, retreat centers, parks and private residences. Our labyrinth is available to our community.

Other programs provided by CVMC's Spiritual Care to area groups include

  • "Dreams: God's Forgotten Language"-Introduction to Group Dream Work
  • Healing Touch: The Power of Presence and How You Can Make a Difference
  • End of Life: Ethics, Issues and Concerns
  • Communicating with Compassion
