"Say Cheese" to ... 2011 EBp Week!
Join us for a week of evidence-based practice emphasis on April 10-16. What's there to look forward to? A housewide "research" study during lunch and supper daily in the cafeteria. This year's theme is "Say cheese" and you'll enjoy participating in a cheese taste test. Traveling to your department will be the team game, "Who's First," allowing you to test your EBP knowledge. Prizes are to be had for correct answers! The poster session in the Jade Room will open on Tuesday afternoon, April 12th at 1600 and remain open through Wednesday at 1300. Are you interested in presenting a project from your department? Email us

Libby Shaver, MSN, RN, CBN, Surgical Weight Management
From babies to bariatrics, Libby Shaver has been employed at CVMC for 24 years. She began her nursing career in pediatrics after graduating with her BSN from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1984. In 2003, she completed her MSN at Gardner-Webb University and accepted the responsibility to develop and coordinate CVMC's Bariatric Surgical Program. In 2007, Libby was one of the first 300 nurses in the U.S. to receive the Bariatric Nursing Certification.
For Libby, evidence-based practice means that she can ensure that our bariatric surgical program delivers high quality peri- and post-operative care and long term follow-up by using the latest research. She has also put the evidence into practice through development of a monthly support group for bariatric surgery patients. Research shows that patients, who are engaged in post-operative support, have a greater chance of being successful long term following weight loss surgery than those that do not participate.
In 2007, Libby served as a member on the National Association of Bariatric Nursing (NABN) Best Practice Safety Committee. This committee was charged with researching safe patient care practices related to morbidly obese patients. Findings were presented at national conference and published in the December 2008 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care. Today Libby’s focus for CVMC’s program is to demonstrate excellence in bariatric surgery and patient access to safe, effective evidence-based care by achieving Centers of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery designation.
Libby and husband Robert of 23 years reside in Hickory, and are parents of Eric (19), a pre-pharmacy major at Campbell University, and McKenna(14). When not playing taxi driver for her teenage daughter, Libby enjoys spending time with family, reading and gardening. §
