EBP & U: Branching Out and Learning Too

Curious about research and/or evidence-based practice? Then do NOT pass up the chance to become one of the first graduates of EBP&U;?!
The Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council announces a new opportunity for nurses to become involved in research and evidence-based practice at CVMC. EBP&U; is an exciting educational program offered by the Council as a PEP-sponsored (Professional Enrichment Program) activity for the first time during the upcoming 2012/2013 PEP-cycle. EBP&U; is a means for nursing to be immersed in research and EBP, while reaping rewards on several different levels.
The program is modeled after an academic curriculum with required core courses and elective courses for scholars to choose from to complete the educational program. Participants must complete the EBP&U; curriculum during the upcoming PEP cycle in order to 'graduate.'

Interested candidates apply to EBP&U; via a process that includes an application, letter of intent and letter of recommendation from a nursing leadership. Applicants submit the required materials to the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council for consideration. Upon selection, the scholar will be paired with a personal CMVC EBP&U; advisor. Much like in academia, your advisor cannot do the work for you; however, they are available and eager to help you succeed in the program.

A brief sample of the core courses/activities include: Journal Club(s), Stats 101 & Sampling, Let’s Get Cooking with EBP, Searching the Literature, Appraising the Literature, Levels of Evidence, etc. A number of curriculum courses are eligible for contact hours, which as we all know is always an added bonus. While mentioning bonuses, over and above the remarkable learning opportunities, EBP&U; graduates are eligible for a PEP monetary award.
Contact the Department for Research and Evidence-Based Practice or a Council member for more details. Look on the CVMC intranet for the 2012-2013 PEP application, policy and forms by clicking on Nursing followed by PEP (Quick Links).

We want YOU be one of the first graduates of EBP&U;!

Kim Sloop, BSN, RN, Clinical Development Coordinator, Oncology

Kim has truly experienced and learned the value of evidence-based practice and research throughout the decade of her professional career as an oncology nurse. “As a Clinical Development Coordinator, I try to promote participation in EBP and research activities.” Further she notes, “I am a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, and try to stay up to date with the most current topics and best practices in oncology.” Kim stresses the importance for all nurses to stay current on new trends and practices in their specialties. A great way of doing so is to participate in conferences and conventions. She recently returned from the National Oncology Nursing Society Congress in New Orleans, where she was impressed by the amount of research that was being performed by nurses. With a renewed love for her chosen specialty and an overwhelming pride in her hospital and the direction that nursing is taking at CVMC, Kim returned to CVMC stating, “we are already doing many of the things that we saw and heard about at Congress.” She continues, “we have a lot to be proud of here.”

In her new role as CVMC's Palliative Care Nurse, she reflects, “I enjoy collaborating with the nurses and physicians on other units and learning about other medical conditions and diagnoses.” It has been enlightening for her to learn more about other disease processes outside of the oncology realm and venturing out into other specialty areas. But most of all, Kim stresses, “I enjoy interacting with and providing support for patients and their families,” basics of palliative care. She is excited about the future of CVMC’s Palliative Care Services Program and the impact it has had and will continue to have on our community.

An alumnus of Lenoir-Rhyne College, she graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 2001. Further building her expertise, Kim obtained her Oncology Nursing Certification in 2007. When not at work, she leads a busy life ... she is the married mom of two girls, Kaleigh, 6 and Kyndal, 3. On her days off, this active nurse enjoys her pets, shopping, and the great outdoors. §
