This annual event featured exciting activities throughout the week, e.g., mini-EBP sessions on Levels of Evidence and Research & EBP Toolkits and Evidence-Based Resources, two journal clubs, a poster session featuring research, EBP and QI projects from LRU students and CVMC staff nurses, and a mock 'research' study.
The Palliative Care Journal Club and the Magnet Hospitals & Patient Outcomes both sparked interesting discussions. In addition, participants had the opportunity to evaluate the quality of the research articles and validity of the findings. Ninety-five persons toured the poster session where 17 student posters and 6 CVMC nursing posters were displayed and received an EBP pen at the end. Sopapillas were served in the cafeteria in honor of the the CVMC staff and college seniors presenting. Charles McNally, BSN was lucky winner of the presenters' door prize.
How many staff became subjects in the Salsa Tasting mock 'research' study? Well after forming their opinion, or hypothesis, about which salsa sample was the national name brand and which one was the store brand, 215 research subjects evaluated the different salsas by tasting. Their hypotheses were tested using a double-blind research design.

CVMC's Dr. Tart Presenting at 2012 ANCC Research Symposium
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has scheduled their 3rd annual Research Symposium in Los Angeles, California on October 9th prior to the ANCC National Magnet Conference. This year's symposium theme is "Building Research Capacity in Your Organization," and it focuses on providing advanced and skill-building sessions to establish and expand a Magnet research agenda in healthcare organizations. Dr. Tart will be a member of a three speaker-panel adressing the topic of "Using the nurse scientist role to expand research capacity." Congratulations to CVMC's Research & Evidence-Based Practice Program on being invited to share the success our community Magnet hospital has demonstrated in nursing research. §
Amanda Walker, BSN, RN, Surgical & Ortho/Neuro
Amanda began working at CVMC in 2002 as a nursing assistant on the Surgical Unit. In 2003 she graduated from the nursing program at Western Piedmont Community College and then stated her nursing career in the same unit. Once the hospital created a setting to care for the post-surgical orthopedic population on a new Ortho/Neuro unit, she discovered her passion for this specialized patient clientele and has remained in that setting since. Amanda has just completed her Baccalaureate in Nursing degree from Winston-Salem State University this month. She was recently promoted to the Resource Coordinator position for the Surgical and Ortho/Neuro Units.
Amanda is currently involved in an Ortho/Neuro “Point-of-Care EBP Team,” whose focus is pre-operative education to aid in post-operative pain management. She was motivated by her Nurse Manager, Amanda Gaddy, BSN, RN, and her colleague, Amy Squire, BSN, RN, OCN, to get involved in this project. Amanda admits this has been a new adventure, and that she has learned a great deal about the EBP process. To her surprise, she actually enjoyed attending classes to learn more about evidence-based practice. She said she really enjoyed Let’s Get Cooking with EBP because she was “enlightened” about the process. The team is making progress and is preparing to submit their project for IRB approval. Amanda is especially excited about this project because it has the “potential to improve patient outcomes.” She emphasizes, “This alone makes the process worthwhile.”
Amanda believes EBP is the framework for patient care and best nursing practices. She also says “EBP at CVMC will pave the path for future patient care. After all, it is patient-centered and we should continue to strive for excellence.” In her spare time, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family including, three year old son, Brock. They enjoy lots of outdoor activities such as gardening, hanging out on the lake, visits to Tweetsie Railroad & Splash County, and watching dirt track races. §
