December 2011

Is 2012 YOUR Year for Research and/or EBP?

2011 is almost history. A new year is just around the corner and so too New Year’s resolutions. As you take stock of the past 12 months, think about how you have grown professionally. Did you accomplish the goals you set for yourself? What have you decided to pursue in 2012? Can your goal(s) be put in a one-word nutshell?

Do you have a burning clinical question? Something you really want to find the answer to. If you do, then this is YOUR year to make research or EBP your word for 2012.

Catawba Valley Medical Center supports the pursuit of clinical research and evidence-based practice through its Department for Research and Evidence-Based Practice and the Research & EBP Council. The Department exists to promote research and EBP at the point-of-care where the best clinical questions come to light.

If you find yourself thinking, "I don’t even understand what research is much less how to go about it." Not to worry. Did you know that an advanced degree is not required to become a member of a research or EBP team at CVMC? Also, participating in a study or project is the best way to allay your fears and get your "feet wet." You can learn by doing. It is as simple as that. As you become part of the team, you’ll likely find others in the same boat as you. That’s OK, because there will be an experienced mentor leading the team. You will learn alongside your colleagues as the group conducts the research study or carries out the EBP project. The team is a safe place to be while you grow your research or EBP expertise.

Step up to the plate. Take your question, issue or idea to your unit shared governance council. Then take the lead or follow the leader. Remember, CVMC’s Department for Research and Evidence-Based Practice and the Research & EBP Council are here to help you succeed. §

CVMC Employee selected to participate in the NCNA Nurse Leadership Academy

Trish Beckman, CNM, MPH, NEA, Administrator of the Center for Woman & Children has been selected to participate in the North Carolina Nuses Association (NCNA) Nurse Leadership Academy. Recognizing that leadership development is an essential element in the process of advancing the profession, NCNA is implementing a new leadership development program.

The recommendation originated from the NCNA Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future of Nursing. This task force is a group of high profile thought leaders across the state, charged by NCNA President Ernest Grant to advise the board on key priorities for NCNA as they relate to the implementation of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Future of Nursing Report and recommendations. All interested NCNA members are invited to apply for the NCNA Leadership Academy. A class of 20 participants will be selected to begin late 2011 or early 2012.

NCNA’s Leadership Academy will be housed within NCNA’s charitable arm, the North Carolina Foundation for Nursing. It will be a high-intensity, competitive application leadership development program for nurses to prepare them for positions of strategy and influence, especially as they relate to changes recommended in the national IOM Future of Nursing Report. The program will place a premium on educating, mentoring and grooming nurses to serve as active leaders in a variety of positions, i.e., state and local government boards/commissions, elected office, hospital boards and leadership, community boards, etc.

Congratulations Trish on this extraordinary achievement and best wishes from your colleagues as you embark on this venture! §

Janine Jolly, BSN, RN, Psychiatry Services

Janine is one of the newest members of the Research & EBP Council. She recently read an article that explored the impact of evidenced-based decisions on health care. The article showed how decisions driven by evidence help to transform the structure and culture of a health care organization in addition to enabling clinicians to make more effective decisions.?Janine agrees that evidence-based decisions empower nurses to make better decisions about patient care; furthermore, she feels EBP helps clinicians provide the highest quality of care in meeting the multidimensional needs of our patients and families.

Janine has worked on Psychiatry at CVMC since January of 2011. Prior to coming to work at CVMC, she worked as a staff nurse in a state psychiatric facility. In 2007 Janine received an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Western Piedmont Community College, and in 2009 she obtained her Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from Winston Salem State University. Janine really enjoys research and previously worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator for an independent research company.

Janine is originally from New Jersey and moved to North Carolina in 1994. Janine enjoys spending time with her with family during her free time. She and her husband have six children. Janine is currently pursuing a MSN as well as a Masters in Healthcare Administration. She is excited about the opportunity to work with the Research & EBP Council.§
