Who Found Out Research Isn't Scary? ... 174 CVMC Employees!

Our Annual Research Theater, the signature event of the Department for Research and Evidence-Based Practice, has earned its spot on many people's calendars as an event not to be missed.  From a Zoomerang™ survey to participants asking why they registered for the Theatre, one attendee stated, "I have attended in previous years and found it to be an outstanding event."   Another said, "It is an excellent learning experience," while according to another, "[the Theatre] increased my awareness of methods to improve outcomes."

Maintaining the tradition of showcasing research being conducted around the Medical Center, but unique in spotlighting a variety of clinical fields, the 4th Annual Research Theatre featured presentations by Kristen Cline, MS, CCC-SLP, Nancy Johnson, BSN, RN, and Myra McDonough, BS, ACSM-HFS.  The research topics presented were, “Dysphagia Screening for Acute Stroke Patients,” “Going Green: Controlled Breathing With or Without Aromatherapy for Relief of PONV,” and “Can We Scare Away Childhood Obesity.”

A record audience of 174 primarily consisting of CVMC employees (68% nursing units, 27% ancillary departments and 5% administration) were present at the event.  Based on survey responses, 40% were first time attendees.  Eighty-nine percent of theatre-goers indicated the content was valuable to their practice further highlighting the significance of this event in disseminating research at CVMC.  In addition, the Research Theatre has become an important tool to inform novice researchers, and to 'demystify' the research process for those interested in conducting a project.

What would participants like to learn about in future Theatre events?  Improving patient outcomes, pain control and alternate methods of controlling pain, hospital readmission rates, infection control, etc.  In the words of one attendee, “anything that is being done …it’s extremely fascinating to see bedside research being done and gratifying to know we constantly are making a difference for our patients and improve staff processes.”  §

Michael McDonald, BS, Operating Room

Did you know that CVMC's Lead Anesthesia Technician is back in school?  Michael McDonald earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Franciscan University, which is located in Steubenville, Ohio 40 miles West of Pittsburgh.  He's been employed at CVMC since 2004.  Michael decided to apply to nursing school and is currently in his 2nd year at Catawba Valley Community College.

This past June, he participated along with 55 other CVCC nursing students in Let's Get Cooking with EBP, a course sponsored by the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council.  When questioned about the course, Michael said, "It was a tangible illustration of EBP.  I liked the definitive result that came from following the recipe exactly."  He also stated that this course demonstrated for him that implementing one's individual choices can lead to less variance in the results.  According to Michael, "this was a review of what we'd been introduced to in class last year.  However, when presented with a new concept [like EBP], you might get 30-40% of it the first time around.  We need reiteration of new concepts."

Michael indicated he sees evidence-based practice as a way to bring "continuity to patient care."  He admits accepted practices may not always be best practice.  On the subject of research, he said, "I don't like to do research, but I do like to read research."

The father of two boys and a girl, ages 5-2, Michael shuffles marriage, work, school and being a dad and manages to keep smiling.  §
