The Sports Medicine Program at Catawba Valley Medical Center provides education and healthcare services to the athletes, coaches, and parents of Catawba County and its surrounding areas. These services focus on the prevention, recognition, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
Catawba Valley Medical Center provides certified athletic trainers to area high schools as part of its sports medicine outreach program. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches, and parents. Each of our certified athletic trainers has graduated from a four year university, passed a national certification exam, and been approved for licensure in North Carolina.
CVMC currently provides sports medicine services to Newton-Conover High School, Maiden High School, and Bandys High School.
Services a certified athletic trainer can provide include the following:
• Evaluation of athletic injuries
• Taping and/or bracing to prevent further injury
• Treatment and/or rehabilitation of minor injuries
• Determination of need for physician referral
• Assistance in setting appointment to see physician
• Coordination with physical therapist to assist with rehabilitation
• Emergency first aid and CPR
• Education on basic nutrition and hydration
• Instruction on proper warm-up and cool-down stretching
• Instruction on strength and conditioning techniques
