At Catawba Valley Medical Center’s Center for Rehabiliation, stroke recovery has become a primary emphasis based on need.  A neurodevelopmental treatment approach is utilized by the center’s specialized rehabilitation therapists for improved function and recovery from stroke.  The center also offers a weekly physician-led support group for stroke patients and survivors.

The stroke rehabilitation program focuses on treating the impairments of stroke patients through therapy facilitation approaches and pharmacological interventions to maximize recovery.  Traditional stroke treatment employs the use of compensatory techniques from physical, occupational and speech therapies, while natural recovery occurs over time. 

The program is also applying medical treatment to correct underlying problems that may cause a recurrent stroke and is utilizing medications that help physical deficits and cognitive aspects affected by strokes.  While the medications are not new, the way they are being utilized for stroke patients is an innovative new course of care – one that reflects the medical center’s commitment to the best rehabilitation protocols available.
